The ‘Go with the Flow’ garden is a reaction to wetter winters and the worsening floods happening around the country. Overloaded rainwater systems go on to overwhelm water treatment plants and these storm surges cause the release of untreated or partially treated sewage into our waterways.
The garden presents an attractive alternative, designed as a plug and play system where existing drains and downpipes can be rerouted through richly planted gullies. Native plants fill the gullies, containing and slowing the flow of water, which continues into small catchment pools then a bog garden, a haven for wildlife.
Plants
The planting celebrates the best of British wetland plants, featuring a multi-stem Salix alba, this icon of British water ways has long and elegant leaves and is an important food source for many native caterpillars. The colour scheme is very natural, inspired by British waterways, with lots of verdant greens, whites and yellows, pale pinks, blues and purples.
