The design concept is wilderness in the Portuguese sense, "regiao selvagem", or the Mediterranean maquis or garrigue landscapes of scrub and gravel. The entire garden is devoted to a return to a wilder garden experience using a range of native or native type species that will produce a more sustainable landscape with a diversity of experience.
Sharply defined terraces, decks and screening walls contrast dramatically with the planted landscape to deliver a play of light that will change throughout the day as the sun and shadows move across the garden. The textured foliage planting including grasses, creeping groundcovers, herbs, gnarled shrubs and trees and tall pines will provide a rich contrast to the clean and monumental architecture of the house, its raised terraces and refreshing pools.

Boulders and stone walls are used to retain levels and to reflect the local vernacular. They also provide a counterpoint to the loose and naturalistic planting especially in the “dry stream” pathways that run through the garden.
