The Putting Down Roots' garden brings the warm tones and sunny climate of Los Angeles, where I grew up, to the UK where I have lived for over 30 years. Stepping stones are loosely set in gravel, for a casual, wild and contemporary feel. This, along with Agaves ves and succulents in pots, reflects California courtyard aesthetics.
The scheme includes drought-tolerant plants native to California and the colour scheme is replete with warm oranges and complementary purples and greens, reminiscent of the Huntington Botanical Gardens in San Marino, one of my favourite gardens.
The garden also reminds us of the increasingly fierce fires that have devastated Southern California, the dangers of climate change and the importance of our connection with the earth.
