The Apothecary is a working garden that incorporates naturally medicinal species for health and wellbeing. It was inspired by the designer’s lifelong passion for healing plants and the ancient knowledge of their medicinal qualities, which he learned about on a trip to the Colombian Andes.
Plants used include elder, lavender, rosemary, dog rose and Verbascum bombyciferum ‘Arctic Summer’. From lemon balms to elderflower cordials, medicinal tinctures to lavender sleeping pouches, all the ingredients for these herbal remedies can be grown in a small garden, helping its owner to live a more natural life.
At the centre of the space is a reclaimed York stone table with a planter carved into its middle and a pestle and mortar at the ready. Elsewhere, a summerhouse made from upcycled windows is a home for sensitive tropical species, while a Victorian linen airer creates a practical, accessible feature that’s also ideal for drying herbs. The whole space has a homely feel, with most of the items being either reused or recycled.
