The Savills Garden 2007

A pale, minimal wall formed an important structural element within the garden, separating and framing its different areas. Sections of flint introduced a contrasting natural texture, while climbing plants softened the hard surfaces and connected the architecture with the surrounding planting.

A still, reflective pool brought light and movement into the garden and enhanced its tranquil atmosphere. The water mirrored the walls, planting and sky, visually enlarging the space and reinforcing the garden's contemplative character.

A paved terrace with wooden seating created a relaxed area for sitting and entertaining. Its simple furniture and uncluttered arrangement reflected the garden's contemporary character, while the surrounding planting gave the space privacy and a sense of enclosure.

The planting was arranged in generous masses rather than as isolated specimens. Perennials in shades of yellow and purple provided strong contrasts of colour, set against varied green foliage and softened by climbers. The combination of disciplined structure, reflective water and loose planting created a garden that felt composed yet natural - a recurring theme in Marcus Barnett's work.
