Gardens and nature have been a part of Martyn’s life since childhood, twin passions that now influence his award-winning designs.
He has fond memories of helping his father grow vegetables as a child, learning about roses from his grandfather and exploring the Pembrokeshire countryside on family holidays.
Living abroad, both as a child and while serving in the RAF, exposed him to different landscapes and garden styles from the arid climate of Sardinia to the clean lines of German and Dutch design. All are experiences he uses when creating gardens that sit comfortably in their surroundings.
After the RAF, Martyn studied geography and environmental management at the University of Worcester, working while a student at Sudeley Castle gardens. This was followed by a postgraduate qualification in spatial planning at Birmingham City University. His work on flood defence strategies means he is well placed to understand the effects of climate change.
He studied Professional Garden Design at The Cotswold Gardening School, going on to create gardens across the Cotswolds, Worcestershire and Warwickshire.
An RHS gold medal winner he has designed many award-winning show gardens, including at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, and was featured on BBC Gardeners’ World.
His commercial and public design portfolio includes projects for Forest Garden Ltd and Birmingham Botanical Gardens.
Nature and a respect for our planet are at the heart of his work from planting with pollinators in mind to recycling plastic pots via the Green Tractor Scheme.
Martyn is the founder and lead designer at Wilson Associates Garden Design. He is a member of the Association of Professional Landscapers and a pre-registered member of the Society of Garden Designers.
